Sweet discovery: New UBC study pushes back the origins of chocolate
As Halloween revelers prepare to feast on chocolate, a new study from an international team of researchers, including the University of British Columbia, is pushing back the origins of the delicious sweet treat. The study, published online today in Nature Ecology & Evolution, suggests that cacao—the plant from which chocolate is made—was domesticated, or grown by people for food, around 1,500 years earlier than previously thought. In addition, the researchers found cacao was originally domesticated in South America, rather than in Central America.

The Midterms Are Our Chance To Vote Out White Supremacy
The results of the 2016 election felt like a punch to the gut. I remember feeling stunned, confused, and unprepared for what lay ahead. I learned in that moment, and in many moments since, that elections have consequences. We enter the Nov. 6 midterm election ruled by a Republican majority carrying out a concerted voter suppression campaign and with a leader blatantly cultivating an environment of racism, sexism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia, xenophobia and oppression. This must end.

Your DNA Is Out There. Do You Want Law Enforcement Using It?
On the afternoon of Nov. 18, 1987, Jay Cook and Tanya Van Cuylenborg left Saanich, B.C., their hometown, to pick up some furnace equipment in Seattle for Cook’s father. Saanich and Seattle are a little more than 100 miles apart, but the trip takes almost five hours: a ferry into the U.S. across the Strait of Juan de Fuca, another across Puget Sound, and between them a winding coastal drive through evergreen forests and fishing towns. The young couple planned to make an overnight jaunt of it.

The culprit is China Telecom, the country's third-largest telco and internet service provider (ISP), which has had a presence inside North American networks since the early 2000s when it created its first point-of-presence (PoP).

Court: Teen’s driving killed someone, but he can’t be forced to give up passcode
A Florida state appellate court has ruled that an inebriated teenager involved in a car crash that resulted in the death of another person cannot be compelled to provide a passcode to his iPhone 7—the boy can indeed invoke a Fifth Amendment privilege, protecting him against self-incrimination. The October 24 ruling in G.A.Q.L. v. State of Florida before the 4th District appellate court runs against a previous ruling by a sister court in a case known as State of Florida v. Stahl.

Working at Netflix Sounds Like Hell
There are many, many jobs that are much worse than working at Netflix. But based on an extensive profile of the company’s culture, the streaming company certainly seems to have built a unique version of corporate hell. Citing interviews with more than 70 current and former employees (some on the record, some off), the Wall Street Journal has published an inside account of Netflix workplace culture. It details a philosophy cobbled together from bits and pieces of self-help lit, business school puffery, Silicon Valley disruption, and new-agey commitments to radical transparency. More than anything, it just seems bizarre.

GM breaks with Trump administration and calls for nationwide electric-car sales program
Two of the biggest automakers are pushing back on the Trump administration’s proposed rollback of U.S. fuel-economy standards.
