Amazon Selects LA for $5 Billion HQ2

Over the next nine years, Amazon will hire as many as 50,000 employees with an annual payroll of over $5 billion, an average of more than $100,000 per employee. Amazon has committed to spending over $5 billion in capital expenditures, in large part on more than 8 million square feet of Class A office space. The company has also indicated that it will aid in the revitalization of its portion of the Los Angeles River, help finance nearby affordable and market rate housing for its workers, develop permanent supportive housing for up to 2,000 homeless veterans in DTLA, and work with LAUSD on mentoring programs.

Russian diplomats interfered in Canada's democracy, Ottawa says. Did they meddle in our election?

When the Canadian government announced it would expel four Russian diplomats in retaliation for the poisoning of an ex-spy in Salisbury, U.K., it raised questions as to whether Ottawa was accusing Moscow of interfering in Canada's most recent election. In a statement, Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland said the four had been identified "as intelligence officers or individuals who have used their diplomatic status to undermine Canada's security or interfere in our democracy."

Europe is dealing with Facebook in a way the U.S. hasn't

Facebook’s efforts to save face over its data policy may be less about responding to outrage and more because it has been forced to by European lawmakers who tackled the digital economy when the U.S. wouldn’t. Critics have called on Facebook for more transparency — and additional regulation from Congress — since the Cambridge Analytica scandal, where a consulting firm that worked with President Trump was able to harvest the data of 50 million users, many without their consent.

Most French say government could do more to prevent terror attacks

More than half of French people believe the government could do more to stop terror attacks, according to a poll published this week, six days after fresh bloodshed in the country. Fifty-eight percent of respondents said that French President Emmanuel Macron and his administration were not using "all the necessary means in the fight against the terrorist threat in France," according to the study by the Elabe polling group.
