Parisians set to go car-free for one day next month

The streets of Paris will look completely different late next month. City officials have announced a plan to enforce a daylong car ban on Sunday, September 25. Parisians will need to leave their car keys at the door from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Last year’s ban was limited to a handful of neighborhoods in the heart of the city, but this year’s has been expanded to include a majority of the districts in central Paris. The city hall predicts that 400 miles’ worth of pavement — including the most touristic areas — will be mostly car-free on the 25th.

A mother is facing charges for leaving her children home alone for 45 minutes while she left to go pick up dinner. Susan Terrillion, 55, was arrested last week after leaving her 8- and 9-year-old kids alone at their vacation rental in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. Police said that they received reports of two children left alone and unsupervised. When they arrived on the scene, a neighbor said the two kids and their dogs ran in front of his car. He stopped to help the children get control of their pets, and that's when he learned that they were alone.

Russian journalist critical of Vladimir Putin found shot in the head

A well-known Russian journalist and critic of President Vladimir Putin has been found dead in his Kiev apartment with a gunshot wound to the head. The body of Alexander Shchetinin, founder the Novy Region (New Region) press agency, was found at his flat after friends tried to visit him on his birthday. A police spokesperson said Kiev forces were alerted of Ms Schetinin’s death at around midnight on Saturday. He is believed to have died a few hours earlier, between 8 and 9.30pm.

Police in China have reportedly ordered hotels to reject guests from five Muslim majority countries. Budget hotels in the southern city of Guangzhou said they had received notices from police beginning in March, ordering them to turn away guests from Pakistan, Syria, Iraq, Turkey, and Afghanistan. China’s foreign ministry said it had never heard of the policy, but several hotel workers have corroborated reports of a ban.
