2 Van Gogh paintings recovered by Italian anti-Mafia police
Italian police have found two Van Gogh paintings that were stolen from an Amsterdam museum in 2002 hidden in a farmhouse near an organized crime syndicate’s Naples-area stronghold, investigators said Friday. The paintings, discovered without their frames, are in “relatively good condition,” the Van Gogh Museum said in a statement on its website. It said the two paintings are the 1882 work “Seascape at Scheveningen” and a later work, “Congregation leaving the Reformed Church in Nuenen.” The earlier painting contains grains of sand that were stirred up from the beach as Van Gogh worked.

World Bank to name and shame countries that fail their stunted children
EThe president of the World Bank has warned he will name and shame countries that fail to tackle the malnourishment and poor growth of their children, as part of a mission to rid the world of stunting. Jim Yong Kim, the former physician who heads the Bank, told the Guardian he would take to the podium at the World Economic Forum in Davos every year to point the finger at governments who failed to live up to promises to tackle a scourge affecting tens of millions of children.

Egyptian MP Calls for Mandatory Virginity Tests for Admittance of Women to Universities
Egyptian member of parliament Elhamy Agina continued his recent string of controversial statements, this time calling for all women to undergo mandatory ‘virginity tests’ to ensure their virginity prior to being admitted to universities in Egypt. In statements to Youm7, Agina, who was previously disciplined for stating women must undergo female genital mutilation, called on the Minister of Higher Education to issue a mandate that would require him or his officials to review all virginity tests prior to providing female students with university cards.

Alabama’s top judge was suspended from the bench and removed from office without pay for the remainder of his term, the state’s Court of the Judiciary ruled Friday. This is the second time Roy S. 20 Years Since Welfare's Overhaul, Results Are Mixed
Twenty years ago, welfare as Americans knew it ended. President Bill Clinton signed a welfare overhaul bill that limited benefits and encouraged poor people to find jobs. "We're going to make it all new again, and see if we can't create a system of incentives which reinforce work and family and independence," Clinton said at a White House bill signing ceremony. The goals were admirable: help poor families get into the workforce so they'd no longer need government aid. They'd get job training and support, such as help with child care.

Polish women to stage all-out strike next week
Women in Poland are to stage an all-out strike to protest the country’s plan to effectively ban abortions. Female workers across the predominantly Catholic country will take part in the action on Monday, in an effort to disruptively draw attention to attempts to restrict Poland’s severely limited abortion laws even further. Those taking part hope the strike will bring Polish society and the economy to a standstill.

DNA breakthrough finally gives ‘a face to this crime.’ But can it solve a woman’s 1992 murder?
Whoever kidnapped, raped and stabbed Lisa Ziegert before dumping her body in a wooded area in southern Massachusetts left a sliver of DNA on the middle school aide’s corpse. For a quarter-century, that DNA was a dead-end — like all the other evidence in the case — as investigators scoured New England for Ziegert’s killer. The DNA did not match convicted felons or sex offenders in federal or state databases. It did not pan out as new investigative methods made better use of blood and tissue samples found at crime scenes.

Bumblebee Set to Become Officially Endangered
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) has proposed listing a species of bumblebee as an endangered species, the first bee species to be granted such federal protection in the continental United States. The rusty patched bumblebee - the workers of which can be identified by a small rust-colored mark on the middle of their second abdominal segment - was historically widespread along the east coast of North America, from Quebec down to Georgia, and across much of the midwest as far west as the Dakotas.

The FBI’s Hillary email probe is looking even more like a coverup
It’s bad enough that FBI Director James Comey agreed to pass out immunity deals like candy to material witnesses and potential targets of his investigation into former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s illegal private email server. But now we learn that some of them were immunized despite lying to Comey’s investigators. In the latest bombshell from Congress’ probe into what’s looking more and more like an FBI whitewash (or coverup) of criminal behavior by the Democratic nominee and her aides, the Denver-based tech who destroyed subpoenaed emails from Clinton’s server allegedly lied to FBI agents after he got an immunity deal.

The Americas Are Now Officially 'Measles-Free'
The Americas are now free of measles, the first region in the world to achieve that goal, the Pan American Health Organization announced this week. The success is credited to the effectiveness of mass vaccination programs over the past 22 years. Yet measles remains a significant problem in other parts of the world, public health officials warn. There were 244,704 cases reported in 2015. And outbreaks could still pop up in the Americas if unvaccinated travelers spread the disease.

Study finds young men are playing video games instead of getting jobs
Danny Izquierdo, a 22-year-old who lives with his parents in Silver Spring, Md., has found little satisfaction in a series of part-time, low-wage jobs he's held since graduating from high school. But the video games he plays, including "FIFA 16" and "Rocket League" on PlayStation and Pokemon Go on his smartphone, are a different story. "When I play a game, I know if I have a few hours I will be rewarded," he said. "With a job, it's always been up in the air with the amount of work I put in and the reward."
