Historians Re-Enter Presidential Studies

In the 1980s, as political scientists were moving into serious study of the presidency, historians were being told that doing so constituted career suicide. As Brian Balogh, a co-editor of the new volume "Recapturing the Oval Office," notes, history had already been through the institutional versus individual wars."Presidential historians" never lost sight of narrative biography, while academic historians turned instead to bottom-up approaches that stressed social and cultural forces.
